The EPFL employs more than 6,500 people supporting the three main missions of the institutions: education, research and innovation. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of more than 18,500 people, including over 14,000 students and 4,000 researchers from more than 120 different countries.MissionIf you are driven to discover, create, and inspire something that has technological impact, and have an ambition to become involved in a future startup that can shape future technology, the LPQM could be the ideal place for you.K-Labat EPFL invites applications for apostdoctoral positionfocused ontechnology transfer and experimental development of traveling wave parametric amplifiers (TWPAs) for quantum computing applications. Quantum-limited microwave amplifiers, which add minimal noise, are key instruments in quantum computing, radio astronomy, and particle physics. Yet, these remain largely inaccessible.Within the framework of a funded tech transfer project by the ERC, we are looking for a postdoctoral scholar with industrial and academic experience to work on the industrialization of a novel superconducting integrated circuit technology for use in the domain of superconducting circuits and quantum computing, with the ultimate aim of launching a spin-off. Commercializing quantum-limited amplifiers, such as traveling wave parametric amplifiers (TWPAs), would accelerate research globally. We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled researcher to help bridge the gap between our state-of-the-art research in superconducting quantum devices and their commercialization. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the interface ofquantum engineering, device physics, and industry engagement, contributing to the maturation and deployment of TWPA technology.Main duties and responsibilitiesDesign, fabricate, and experimentally characterize superconducting TWPAsOptimize device performance (gain, bandwidth, noise) for integration in quantum computing platformsWork in the cleanroom to fabricate devicesSimulate the performance in key software (AWR, etc.)Document results in internal reports, patent applications, and scientific publicationsProvide technical support and guidance for transitioning the technology to commercial viabilityPackaging of the devices using PCB, etcProfilePhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related fieldStrong background in superconducting devices, microwave engineering, or quantum informationHands-on experience with low-temperature measurements (dilution refrigerators), RF design, and/or nanofabrication techniquesDemonstrated ability to work independently and in collaborative, multidisciplinary environmentsInterest or experience in technology commercialization or industrial partnerships is a strong plusExcellent communication and organizational skillsVery good level of spoken and written EnglishWe offerA stimulating research environment within EPFL, one of Europe’s leading institutions for science and technologyAccess to world-class facilities in nanofabrication, cryogenics, and microwave measurementsOpportunities for professional development in technology transfer and entrepreneurshipWork on next generation superconducting technologyBe in a position to become a member of a future spin-offA remarkably well-equipped laboratory, including full in house electronic and optical testing, and in-house integrated silicon photonics foundryJoin a laboratory PI with track record of successful startup launchingA young, dynamic, flexible and highly motivated R&D environmentEmbedded within a team of academic scholars with track record in scientific excellenceSubstantial R&D funds for prototype developmentPosition in Switzerland - an ideal place for high tech startupsAbout K-LabThe K-Lab at EPFL, led by Prof. Tobias J. Kippenberg, focuses on Quantum Measurements and Photonics and is active in multiple domains, including superconducting circuit optomechanics, and next generation integrated photonic circuits. It has also developed state of the art superconducting quantum devices, including Josephson junction based TWPA.Located in Lausanne, EPFL has a campus-like environment situated on the shores of Lakes Geneva and offers a work environment unlike any other: we inspire passion, foster innovation, build collaboration, and reward excellence. LPQM hosts a unique infrastructure, with multi-million CHF investments dedicated to in-house laboratory-based testing, including state of the art cleanroom equipment.InformationApplicants should submit the following documents:A cover letter detailing research interests and career goalsCurriculum vitae, including a list of publicationsTranscripts from Master and BachelorMost significant paper/workContact information of at least two referencesApplication Deadline: Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.Start Date : Flexible, with a target of Fall 2025.Activity Rate : 100%Contract Type: CDDDuration: 1 year, renewableReference: 1699ContactFor complementary information, please contact Prof. Tobias Kippenberg per e-mail: tobias.kippenberg@epfl.chMore informationIn your application, please refer tomyScience.chand referenceJobID69243.
